Illuminated fabric ceiling in clinic

A newly built psychiatric hospital building, we had a challenge, we had to install luminous textile ceilings in five doctor’s stations. High safety requirements were set for the ceiling, as well as for the entire building, which we managed to fulfill.

What safety requirements did we face?

• We had to use only textile ceiling coverings with a minimum Bs1-d0 fire resistance class, according to the EN 13501-1 European standard. Since 30%, 50% and 70% light-transmitting coatings are used for luminous ceilings, matching precisely a light-transmitting and safe material was almost the most difficult task;
• The lighting could only be of the highest IP67 class, which is equivalent to use in outdoor conditions. For luminous ceilings, we use only LED modules, the lighting angle of which cannot be less than 165°. All this in combination required more work with existing and new lighting suppliers. In total, we installed over 5 kW of lighting.
• Smart lighting using the DALI protocol. The power supply units had the same requirements as the LED modules (IP67), we used German-made MeanWell brand dimmable power supply units, which had to “make friends” with the common lighting control center via the DALI protocol and had a dimming function using tablets located at each post.
• There had to be at least 500lux of light to illuminate the room. Therefore, before installing the facility, we conducted several dozen tests to ensure the required amount of light designed by the architects. After installation, we measured the result with a lux meter.
• Safety requirements were also imposed on electrical wires, cables and the base of the LED modules, the lowest fire resistance class was Bs1-d0. We used a plastic and aluminum composite for the base, cable type 3×1.5.

The result exceeded the expectations of the architects and the customer. The lighting at the posts looks even, pleasant and not tiring. The amount of light was obtained higher than planned. The dimming function helps to regulate the amount of lighting depending on the current situation.

Interesting facts about the project

We want to share with you interesting facts about the illuminated ceiling project we implemented in the new building of the Psychiatric Hospital.

• 5 months of teamwork. From order confirmation to the final result, it took us as much as 4 months.
• 16 visits by the project manager to the site. In order to ensure the required quality of work and safety, the project manager supervised this ceiling project from A to Z, starting from the preparation of the proposal and ending with the signing of the work acceptance certificate.
• 11 lighting tests performed. Since the illuminated ceiling in each post room had to drop from 10 cm to 16 cm, separate light transmission tests had to be performed for each room to ensure even lighting.
